Une soirée d’avant-première a eu lieu le 30 avril dernier au parc Disneyland concernant l’attraction Phantom Manor. Cette grande soirée accueillant plus de 3000 invités était l’occasion rêvée de découvrir le manoir en avant-première avant sa réouverture officielle le 3 mai prochain. Attention cet article est à éviter si vous voulez garder la surprise jusqu’au bout des modifications apportées durant les 16 mois de fermetures.
A pre-premiere evening was held on April 30th at Disneyland Park for the Phantom Manor ride. This great evening welcoming more than 3500 guests was the perfect opportunity to discover the mansion in preview before its official reopening on 3 May. Attention this article should be avoided if you want to keep the surprise until the end of the changes made during the 16 months of closures.
Vous avez vu et entendu dans les vidéos ci-dessus où des changements importants ont été réalisés.
Visuellement la nouvelle version est superbe, que ce soit l’éclairage ou l’Audio-Animatronics (robot) qui n’ont jamais été aussi fluide, certains d’entre eux ont même été reprogrammés et leurs mouvements améliorés. Cependant, les nouveaux arrangements audios dans l’attraction ne marchent pas à l’exception de la voix off. Ce qui passe mal c’est d’avoir retiré la bande sonore exclusive à l’attraction crée par John Debney sur les scènes de Loeta et du bal. C’est bien l’une des pires décisions qui pouvait être prise. A la place la musique de The Haunted Mansion résonne, provoquant un sentiment de rupture dans le rythme de l’attraction mais aussi dans la qualité sonore. Les amateurs de l’attraction le disent eux-mêmes en commentaires, c’est « l’erreur majeure dans la nouvelle version ». Pourquoi avoir retiré une musique originale alors même que ces deux scènes correspondait au point culminant du thème original et musical de l’attraction ? On espère sincèrement un retour en arrière pour retrouver le thème d’origine. Cette simple action rendrait l’attraction parfaite !
You have seen and heard in the videos above where significant changes have been made.
Visually the new version is superb, whether it be lighting or audio-animatronics (robots) that have never been so fluid, some of them have even been reprogrammed and their movements improved. However, the new audio arrangements in the attraction do not work except for the voiceover. What goes wrong is to have removed the soundtrack exclusive to the attraction created by John Debney on the scenes of Loeta and the ballroom. That is one of the worst decisions that could be made. Instead the music of the haunted mansion resonates, causing a sense of rupture in the rhythm of the attraction but also in the sound quality. Lovers of attraction say themselves in comments, it’s « the major mistake in the new version ». Why did you remove original music even though these two scenes corresponded to the climax of the original and musical theme of the attraction? We sincerely hope to go back and find the original theme. This simple action would make the attraction perfect!
EDIT : Après 3 jours de préouverture aux visiteurs, Disney a écouté les critiques formulées. La musique originale est de retour dans les scènes de Leota et du bal en cette journée de réouverture. La réactivité de Disney est remarquable et sera apprécié par les visiteurs. Merci à eux pour cette sage et bonne décision. L’attraction est dès lors parfaite !
EDIT: after 3 days of pre-opening to visitors, Disney listened to the criticisms made. The original music is back in the scenes of Leota and the ball on this day of reopening. The responsiveness of Disney is remarkable and will be appreciated by visitors. Thank you to them for this wise and good decision. The attraction is therefore perfect!
Pour ce qui concerne les nouvelles voix off, rien à redire, avec le retour de la voix du grand Vincent Price! Le mélange de sa voix avec celle parlant Français est bien, on peut simplement noter une monté en puissance moins forte dans la scène « d’étirement » à la découverte des quatre prétendants de la mariée.
With regard to the new voices of the Narrator, nothing to complain, with the return of the voice of the great Vincent Price! Maintenant, parlons des changements visuels qui ont été faits dans certaines scènes. Ce que vous devez d’abord savoir, c’est qu’à partir du moment où vous entrez dans le foyer du manoir, un flashbach arrive. Le portrait de Mélanie et de son père, ainsi que l’éclairage changent et montrent comment était la vie était avant. Ce flashback accompagnera les visiteurs dans les couloirs du manoir, avançant dans le temps et découvrant l’histoire tragique des prétendants de la marié Mélanie avant de rentrer dans les « Doom Buggies » (véhicules) pour explorer les lieux.
Now let’s talk about the Visual changes that have been made in some scenes. What you need to know first is that from the moment you enter the foyer of the mansion, a flashbach arrives. The painting of Melanie and her father, as well as the lighting change and show how life was before. This flashback will accompany the visitors in the corridors of the Manor, advancing in time and discovering the tragic story of the suers of the groom Melanie before returning to the « doom buggies » (vehicles) to explore the places.
Dans la salle qui s’agrandit, la mariée a maintenant quatre prétendants qui auront chacun un destin tragique. Il y a de très bons effets visuels avec Mélanie qui disparait des peintures avant que l’ascenseur commence à descendre, laissant ses amis garçons seuls face à leur destin. Parallèlement dans les peintures il y a aussi un effet subtil, comme de la fumée sortant des cheminées des usines par exemple.
In the streching room Mélanie, the bride, has now four contants who will each have a tragic destiny. There are very good visual effect with Mélanie disappearing from the paintings before the elevator starts to go down, leaving her boy friends alone facing their fate. Meaning that Mélanie who in each painting looked to be really painted was in fact a projection effect. But it’s so well done that you can’t notice it. Note that, in one of the paintings there is also a subtle effect of smoke coming out of chimneys.
En sortant miraculeusement de cette salle, nous arrivons dans un couloir de portraits qui changent avec quand ils sont éclairés par le tonnerre. L’effet est très bien réalisé. Henry Ravenswood, le père de la mariée montre son vrai visage, le fantôme du manoir, mais ce n’est pas tout ! Deux autres nouveaux portraits montrent la mort de deux amants de Mélanie vus précédemment. L’un frappé par la foudre à proximité du canyon du Big Thunder visible en arrière-plan et l’autre, abattu par le père durant un Duel devant le manoir de l’amant.
Exiting the stretching room guests enter the portraits room, where they’ll discover three new portraits, including the one of Henry Ravenswood, Mélanie’s father, who magically transform in the Phantom. All others portraits also change with a clap of thunder, and the effect is very well done. The other two new portraits show in fact the fate of Mélanie’s previous contants, on one where the character seems to be struck by lightning we can see Big Thunder mountain in the background, and on the other – a duel in front of the manor where a man is shot by the father.
La peinture avec le bateau a changé aussi. Auparavant, les voiles étaient arrachées à cause de la tempête et maintenant le bateau prend feu. Dans la même pièce, notez que le portrait original de la mariée par Imagineer Julie Svendsen est toujours là.
The painting with the boat has changed too. Previously its sails were torned because of the storm, and now the boat catch fire. In the same room, note that the original bride portrait by Imagineer Julie Svendsen is still there.
Dans la prochaine scène on retrouve la mariée est au sommet de l’escalier dans la salle d’embarquement. Cette nouveauté fonctionne très bien. Elle introduit le visiteur dans le présent et le flashback prend ainsi fin. La présence de la marié à cet emplacement a conduit les concepteurs à mettre une armure là où Mélanie accueillaient les visiteurs depuis 1992 dans la première scène de l’attraction. Armure qui était là, cinq mètres plus loin sur la droite de la scène de couloir sans fin. Notez que la mariée au sommet de l’escalier ne bouge étrangement pas. Elle regarde juste dehors. Dommage, un simple mouvement de bras s’accrochant doucement au rebord de la fenêtre aurait suffi.
In the next scene we find the bride is at the top of the staircase in the boarding room. This novelty works very well. It introduces the visitor into the present and the flashback thus ends. The presence of the groom at this site led the designers to put a weave where Melanie welcomed visitors since 1992 in the first scene of the attraction. Armor that was there, five meters farther to the right of the endless corridor scene. Note that the bride at the top of the staircase does not move strangely. She’s just looking out. En se déplaçant à l’intérieur de la maison, nous arrivons devant la scène du couloir sans fin dans laquelle Mélanie semble toujours tenir un candélabre mais maintenant il y à le fantôme de son père, Henry Ravenswood apparaît également derrière elle. Son emprise est forte sur elle.
Moving inside the House, we arrive at the scene of the endless corridor in which Melanie always seems to hold a candelabra but now there is the ghost of her father, Henry Ravenswood also appears behind her. Her grip is strong on her.
La scène du piano a maintenant deux portraits. Un de Mélanie et un autre de son père. Nous pouvons entendre les notes de Haunted Mansion. Il y a un très bon nouvel effet avec les ombres des doigts du fantôme quand il appuie sur les touches du piano.

We can listen the notes of Haunted Mansion and it’s also more or less from that point that the change of music happen, and the one we can hear for the piano sequence is bad, really. That said, there is a very good new small effect with the shadows of the fingers of the Phantom when he touch the piano keys.
Pas beaucoup de changements dans la séance de Leota, à part l’éclairage et les effets de fumée (projections) sur les murs entre les gargouilles qui sont de retour après plus de 15 ans d’absences. Nous n’avons pas les effets magistraux avec les projections des instruments de musique et la boule de cristal flottant dans l’air comme dans les parcs aux Etats-Unis. Le visage et les cheveux de Leota ont changé, le résultat est meilleur, elle fait plus « mystique » qu’avant.
Not many changes in the session of Leota, except the lighting and smoke effects (projections) on the walls between the gargoyles are back After more than 15 years of absences. La scène du boudoir avec l’effet du fantôme apparaissant dans le miroir de Mélanie est parfaite.

Dans la scène suivante supposément en plein air le Phantom d’Henry, semble avoir maintenant les yeux rouges et ceux des chiens verts.

La promenade continue lorsque les « Doom Buggies » (véhicules) entrent dans la cripte, l’éclairage est entièrement revue y compris dans la ville fantôme de Thunder Mesa, où tous les produits Audio-Animatronics (robots) ont été restaurés dans leurs splendeurs d’origine. Le nouvel éclairage est bien meilleur notamment dans la pièce où se trouve la ville fantôme, car le ciel étoilé et les effets de lumières noires effacent la vision d’une salle rectangulaire. Mais pourquoi tous les habitants de la ville fantôme ont-ils un visage vert ? Peut-être pour faire comprendre aux invités que ce sont des zombies ?
The rest of the ride when the Doom Buggies go underground is quite the same with a very different lighting, including the Thunder Mesa ghost town where all Audio-Animatronics have been restored to their original glory.The last Phantom Manor Audio-Animatronic have been reprogrammed, for the better. The new lighting is much better and int the room with the ghost town some star and lighting effects on the ceiling succeed to cancel the sight of a square box room. But why all unhabitants of the ghost town have a green face? May be to make sure that guests understand that they’re a kind of zombies?
Une des modifications majeures est le fantôme final de Henry et le mausolée des quatre hommes de la scène suivante, où échappent à la main squelettique de l’un des amants de Mélanie. Le dernier tenant une alliance, espère toujours que Mélanie l’épousera enfin.
One of the big modification is the final Phantom of Henry and the next scene mausoleum of the four Man from where escape the skeleton hand of one of Melanie’s lovers. The latter holding a wedding ring, always hopeful that Mélanie will finally marry him.
Deux mètres plus loin, dans la scène face aux miroirs avant le déchargement, l’effet fonctionne parfaitement. Son histoire tragique montre que l’emprise du fantôme sur Mélanie est si forte qu’elle est envahie par la folie et la solitude. Elle apparaît au milieu des invités avec une voix démente, leur demandant de l’épouser.
But just two meters after, in the scene facing the mirrors before unload. The effect works perfectly. Vous l’aurez compris, cette mise à jour de l’attraction est visuellement parfaite, tout comme sa storyline qui est maintenant très claire pour les visiteurs avec des Audio-Animatronics (robots) améliorés tout en conservant la musique originale de l’attraction. Mais une chose est sûre, plus de 16 mois de fermeture pour ce niveau apparent de modifications, c’est beaucoup, alors que les visiteurs occasionnels ne remarqueront pas toutes les modifications de cette réhabilitation très technique.
You’ll understand, this update of the attraction is visually perfect, just like its storyline which is now very clear to visitors with enhanced audio-animatronics (robots) while retaining the original music of the attraction. But one thing is for sure, more than 16 months of closure for this apparent level of changes, that’s a lot, while occasional visitors will not notice any changes to this very technical rehabilitation.
