  • Kendi the Rhino: How Disney’s Animal Kingdom Gave a White Rhino Her Sight Back

Imagine a team so dedicated to their animals that they notice the tiniest change. That’s exactly what happened at Disney’s Animal Kingdom with Kendi, a 27-year-old white rhino who has lived her entire life in the park. Keepers spotted a subtle cloudiness in her right eye, and their sharp observation skills meant veterinarians took immediate notice.

For a rhino as big as Kendi, good vision is vital. It helps her navigate her world, find food, and interact with her environment, alongside her strong senses of smell and hearing.

Thanks to years of building trust and daily care, the veterinary team quickly diagnosed the problem: cataracts. This condition clouds the eye lens and can lead to blindness if left untreated. What came next was an incredible feat of animal care.

A Rare and Highly Complex Procedure

Cataract surgery on a white rhino is incredibly rare and complex. It demanded huge amounts of planning, innovation, and collaboration. Dr. Betsy, a veterinarian with Disney’s Animals, Science and Environment, led the charge from day one.

“I’ve planned for this one procedure more than any other in my life,” Dr. Betsy shared. “It’s truly one of the most rewarding moments of my career. The need for innovation pushed us to think differently, and it really raised the bar for what’s possible in veterinary medicine.”

Preparing for this surgery was no small task. For several years, Kendi’s husbandry team worked tirelessly to train her for voluntary eye drops.

Through sheer patience and trust, Kendi became comfortable receiving this essential medication up to four times a day. This dedication proved invaluable when the big day finally arrived for her surgery in the rhino barn.

Dr. Betsy teamed up with Dr. Caryn Plummer, an ophthalmologist from the University of Florida, a long-term Disney veterinary partner. Together, they designed a procedure that adapted advanced surgical techniques to one of the world’s largest land mammals.

    Kendi Eye Surgery

“It was an honor to be part of Kendi’s care,” said Dr. Plummer. “Cataract surgery is common in humans, but performing it on an animal – especially a white rhino – presents unique challenges. For Kendi, the chance to restore her vision made every difficulty worth it. This success truly relied on the dedicated Disney veterinary and animal care teams, whose teamwork and unwavering commitment to Kendi’s safety were incredible. We hope her improved sight significantly boosts her quality of life.”

The surgery went perfectly. But the specialized care didn’t stop there!

A Uniquely Disney Approach to Healing

Kendi’s recovery needed constant monitoring and some truly imaginative solutions. In a fantastic cross-functional effort, Disney’s own costuming team spent two years designing and crafting a custom, protective eye mask just for her.

“This was definitely outside our usual requests,” said Tracy, a costuming manager. “But nothing about this project was ordinary. We worked incredibly closely with the Animal Care teams to create a custom solution that fit Kendi perfectly and supported her comfort and healing at every stage.”

This collaborative spirit reminds us all that caring for animals at Disney involves so many talented people. Whether they are veterinarians, keepers, designers, or engineers, teams across the company come together to use their skills when it matters most.

    Kendi on Savanna

Kendi’s recovery means more than just restoring sight to one animal; it’s about protecting an entire species.

White rhinos are currently near threatened in the wild. Protecting individuals like Kendi helps the wider mission of species conservation, including projects supported by the Disney Conservation Fund that safeguard rhinos and their habitats in Africa and Asia.

Kendi’s journey also offers an inspiring chance to educate and connect with people. Dr. Betsy and Dr. Plummer plan to share their surgical techniques and lessons learned with the global veterinary community, so other rhinos can benefit. For families and kids visiting the parks, Kendi’s story shows how caring for one animal can spark a passion for protecting wildlife everywhere.

Today, Kendi is happily back on the savanna at Animal Kingdom, seeing clearly and moving with renewed confidence. Her incredible story perfectly showcases what happens when dedicated teams combine thoughtful, creative solutions with science and a deep love for the animals in their care.
