  • Kendi the Rhino: How Disney’s Animal Kingdom Restored Her Sight

Imagine an animal living its whole life in the magic of Disney, then slowly losing its sight. That’s exactly what happened to Kendi, a magnificent 27-year-old white rhino at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. But thanks to incredible dedication and a bit of Disney magic (aka cutting-edge science!), her story has a truly heartwarming ending.

At Disney’s Animal Kingdom, the Animal Care team knows their residents intimately. They spot even the tiniest change. So, when Kendi, who has called the park home her entire life, showed a slight cloudiness in her right eye, her keepers noticed it immediately. The veterinarians performing Kendi’s regular check-ups took this subtle sign very seriously.

For a rhino of Kendi’s impressive size, good vision is crucial. Alongside her sharp sense of smell and hearing, it helps her navigate, find food, and interact with her world.

Those subtle clues pushed her care team to investigate further. After years of building trust through daily care and careful observation, vets quickly identified the problem: cataracts. This condition clouds the eye lens and can lead to blindness if left untreated.

What happened next was truly groundbreaking in animal care.

    A Pioneering Surgery

Operating on a cataract in a white rhino is incredibly rare and complex. It demanded extensive planning, innovation, and teamwork. Dr. Betsy, a vet with Disney’s Animals, Science and Environment, was involved every step of the way.

“I’ve planned for this procedure more than any other in my life,” shared Dr. Betsy. “It’s been one of the most rewarding moments of my career. The need for innovation pushed us to think differently, and it truly raised the bar for what’s possible in veterinary care.”

Preparing Kendi for this surgery was a monumental task. For several years, the husbandry team worked tirelessly, training Kendi to accept eye drops voluntarily.

Through incredible patience and trust-based care, Kendi grew comfortable with getting these essential medications up to four times a day. This dedication proved priceless when the time came for the actual surgery in the rhino barn.

Dr. Betsy teamed up with an ophthalmologist from the University of Florida, a long-time Disney veterinary partner. Together, they designed a procedure, adapting advanced surgical techniques for one of the world’s largest land mammals.

    Kendi Eye Surgery

“It was a true honor to be part of Kendi’s care,” said Dr. Caryn Plummer from the University of Florida. “Cataract surgery is routine for humans, but performing it on an animal – especially a huge white rhino – brings extraordinary challenges. For Kendi, the chance to restore her vision made every complexity worth tackling. This wouldn’t have happened without Disney’s dedicated veterinary and animal care team. Their teamwork, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to Kendi’s safety were crucial. We really hope her improved sight makes a big difference in her quality of life.”

The surgery was a huge success, but the care didn’t stop there.

    A Truly Disney Recovery

Kendi’s recovery required constant monitoring and some seriously creative solutions. In a fantastic cross-department collaboration, Disney’s legendary costuming team spent two years designing and crafting a custom, protective eye mask just for her.

This unique piece of aftercare equipment shielded her healing eye and allowed her to receive all the necessary post-operative eye drop treatments.

“This was definitely outside our team’s usual requests,” shared Tracy, a costuming manager. “But nothing about this project was ordinary. We worked hand-in-hand with the Animal Care teams to create a custom solution that fit Kendi’s anatomy perfectly and supported her comfort and recovery every step of the way.”

This collaborative spirit reminds us that animal care at Disney is never just one person’s job. Whether they are vets, keepers, designers, or engineers, people from across the company bring their unique talents together when it matters most.

    Kendi on Savanna

Kendi’s recovery is more than just restoring sight to one animal; it’s about protecting an entire species. White rhinos are “near threatened” in the wild. Protecting individuals like Kendi helps support the wider efforts of species conservation, including work funded by the Disney Conservation Fund, which protects wildlife like rhinos and their habitats in Africa and Asia.

Kendi’s story inspires and educates. For the veterinary community, Dr. Betsy and Dr. Plummer plan to share their surgical technique and key learnings so rhinos worldwide can benefit. For families and children, Kendi’s journey shows how caring for one animal can inspire the protection of wildlife everywhere.

Today, Kendi is back on the savanna at Animal Kingdom. With clearer vision and renewed confidence, her story shines a light on what happens when dedicated teams work together, bringing thoughtful, creative, and science-backed solutions to animal care.
