  • Kendi the Rhino Sees Again: An Incredible Story from Disney’s Animal Kingdom

At Disney’s Animal Kingdom, the animal care team knows their residents intimately. They quickly spotted a subtle cloudiness in Kendi’s right eye. Kendi, a 27-year-old white rhino, has lived her whole life at the park, so her keepers and vets noticed even the slightest change. This slight shift in her vision immediately caught the veterinarians’ attention.

For a rhino as big as Kendi, good vision is vital. It helps her navigate, find food, and interact with her environment, alongside her sharp sense of smell and hearing. Losing it would change her whole world.

These subtle signs pushed her care team to investigate further. Thanks to years of daily care and the incredible trust Kendi placed in her keepers, the veterinarians quickly diagnosed the problem: cataracts. This condition clouds the eye’s lens and, if left untreated, can lead to blindness.

What happened next was truly groundbreaking in animal care, a real game-changer.

    A Rare and Complex Procedure

Performing cataract surgery on a white rhino is incredibly rare and complex. It demanded huge amounts of planning, innovation, and collaboration. Dr. Betsy, a veterinarian from Disney’s Animals, Science and Environment, led every step of the preparation.

“I’ve planned for this procedure more than any other in my life,” shared Dr. Betsy. “It’s truly one of the most rewarding moments of my career. The innovation pushed us to think outside the box, raising the bar for what we can achieve in veterinary care.”

Preparing for this surgery wasn’t easy. For years, the husbandry team dedicated themselves to training Kendi. Their goal? To get her comfortable with voluntary eye drops.

Thanks to incredible patience and trust-based care, Kendi learned to accept her essential eye medication up to four times a day. This dedication and meticulous preparation were priceless when the surgery day finally arrived at the rhino barn.

Dr. Betsy teamed up with an ophthalmologist from the University of Florida (UF), a long-time veterinary partner of Disney. Together, they designed a procedure, adapting advanced surgical techniques for one of the world’s largest land mammals. Think about that challenge!

    Kendi Eye Surgery

“Being part of Kendi’s care was a true honor,” said Dr. Caryn Plummer, the ophthalmologist from the University of Florida. “Cataract surgery is routine for humans, but for an animal, especially a white rhino, it’s incredibly challenging. With Kendi, the chance to restore her sight made every complexity worth tackling. This whole endeavor wouldn’t have happened without Disney’s dedicated veterinary and animal care team. Their teamwork, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to Kendi’s safety were crucial. We really hope her improved vision makes a huge difference in her quality of life.”

The surgery succeeded, but Kendi’s journey wasn’t over. Her recovery needed even more ingenuity.

A Truly Disney Approach to Healing

Kendi’s successful surgery meant recovery needed constant attention and creative thinking. Here’s where it gets really Disney: the costuming team, yes, the same people who make our favorite character outfits, spent two years designing a custom, protective eye mask just for Kendi!

This one-of-a-kind piece of aftercare equipment protected her healing eye. Crucially, it also allowed the team to administer all the vital post-operative eye drops. Ingenious!

“This was definitely outside our usual brief,” admitted Tracy, a costuming manager. “But nothing about this project was ordinary! We collaborated closely with the Animal Care teams, creating a custom solution that perfectly fit Kendi’s anatomy and supported her comfort and recovery.”

This incredible teamwork reminds us that animal care at Disney isn’t just one job. Vets, keepers, designers, engineers – people from every corner of the company brought their unique talents together. That’s the Disney magic in action when it matters most.

    Kendi on Savanna

Kendi’s recovery means so much more than just restoring one animal’s sight. It’s about protecting an entire species.

White rhinos are “near threatened” in the wild. Protecting individuals like Kendi directly supports broader species conservation efforts, including vital work by the Disney Conservation Fund to protect rhinos and their habitats across Africa and Asia.

Kendi’s journey offers a powerful opportunity to educate and inspire. Dr. Betsy and Dr. Plummer will share their surgical techniques and insights with the global veterinary community, hoping rhinos everywhere can benefit. For families and children, Kendi’s story beautifully illustrates how caring for one animal can inspire worldwide wildlife protection.

Today, Kendi roams the savanna at Animal Kingdom once more, enjoying clearer vision and new confidence. Her story truly shows what happens when dedicated teams combine scientific rigor with thoughtful, creative solutions, all driven by a deep commitment to animal care.
