  • Tiana’s Bayou Adventure: A Hidden Tribute to Military Fathers

Ever wondered if Disney Parks hide deeper meanings in their rides? Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, now open at Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort, comes with a truly heartfelt backstory you might have missed.

Disney’s admiration for U.S. military service runs deep, tracing back to founders Walt and Roy O. Disney, who served during the First World War. This tradition shines brightly in the new attraction, offering a special salute to veterans.

This Father’s Day, as families celebrate, one of the most touching tributes to dads waits inside Tiana’s Bayou Adventure at Magic Kingdom and Disneyland Park. It’s a detail crafted with incredible care.

When Imagineers teamed up with Walt Disney Animation Studios to create the attraction, they deeply explored the story of Tiana’s father, James. A decorated World War I veteran, his influence profoundly shaped the hardworking, determined Tiana we all adore.

Keep your eyes peeled in the attraction’s queue. You’ll discover photos, memorabilia, and powerful letters James sent Tiana while serving overseas during WWI. These details honor both military service and the incredible families who support those who serve. Disney Imagineers designed these elements specifically as a tribute to military families.

This small but mighty tribute truly honors the lasting legacy of fathers who serve, inspiring future generations just as James inspired Tiana.

Back in May 2024, Imagineering first unveiled details about James’ military backstory. Fans of The Princess and the Frog know Tiana’s father was a WWI veteran, and Imagineers beautifully expanded this part of his story within the attraction, working closely with Disney Animation.

Ted Robledo, Executive Creative Director for Walt Disney Imagineering, wanted to honor veterans by expanding James’ story. He highlights Tiana’s relatability: her mother, an entrepreneurial dressmaker, and her father, a decorated veteran. This blend makes her story so powerful.

“We looked for inspiration for how we could best expand on his backstory in a way that honored the military families who visit our parks,” Ted explains. “In creating these photos for the attraction, we were inspired by real photos of soldiers who served during WWI to ensure we got it right.”

Imagineers drew inspiration from incredible soldiers of the 369th Regiment, one of the first African American regiments to serve with the American Expeditionary Forces during WWI. This unit was famous for its bravery, with many members earning the prestigious French Croix de Guerre medal for their valiant service. Imagine that!

In faded sepia tone, Tiana's father, James, offers gumbo to military service members as they play instruments around him.

This tribute carries special meaning for project lead Charita Carter, Executive Creative Producer for Walt Disney Imagineering. She’s the daughter of a career U.S. Air Force officer. Her personal connection made this detail even more significant.

“Growing up in a military family is a wonderful and challenging experience that we hoped to pay tribute to inside our newest attraction, even if in a small way,” Charita shared. “In this expanded story, you will see just how much Tiana is proud of her father and his military service. Just like so many of the families who visit us are proud of their military hero. I know I am very proud of my family’s military service, including my father and sister.”
