We all do it, right? You walk into Magic Kingdom, and your eyes go straight to Cinderella Castle. It’s just magic! Now, get ready, because this iconic landmark at Walt Disney World shines even brighter thanks to a fantastic new look.
Teams across the resort worked together to make it happen. For months, these incredible teams balanced a bold creative vision with some serious logistical challenges. Their goal? To respect the Castle’s long history while giving it a fresh, dazzling presence for every guest today.
We first heard about this Castle refresh last year at Destination D23, and the buzz among Disney fans was instant! Walt Disney Imagineering, Facility Asset Management (FAM), Disney Live Entertainment, Project Development, Operations, and PhotoPass teams all pitched in. Each step combined creative ideas with flawless execution.
For Nathan, an Associate Project Manager with FAM, this project meant even more. He started his Disney journey as an intern just a few years ago; now he helps keep the magic alive across Walt Disney World. For months, he oversaw the Castle’s repainting, guiding his teams on one of Disney World’s most visible projects.

“It’s not every day someone tells you, ‘Hey, you’re going to change the look of one of Disney’s most iconic buildings!'” Nathan shared. “The excitement hit me instantly, followed very quickly by the sheer weight of it all.”
While guests on Main Street U.S.A. now snap photos and enjoy the finished paint project, the behind-the-scenes work was anything but simple. Far from it.
Restoring a Classic Look
Walt Disney Imagineering chose a new paint scheme, bringing the Castle back to a more classic appearance. The colors reflect Florida’s sunshine, making the Castle shimmer from every angle and highlighting its incredible architectural details.

Chris, a Senior Creative Director at Walt Disney Imagineering, explained their approach. “When we had the chance to introduce a new color palette, honoring our Castle’s history and heritage was paramount,” he said. “We drew inspiration from its classic 1971 look, choosing elegant shades that evoke fantasy. Deep blue roofs, intricate stonework, and graceful gold trim now highlight the architectural details, celebrating every whimsical touch of our park icon.”
Historical research, collaboration, and careful planning guided the design. The goal: a refreshed yet familiar feel.

Getting to Work
But before any paint could even touch the Castle walls, the FAM team faced a huge logistical hurdle: draining the moat, hundreds of gallons of water!
“Getting into the moat was probably one of the toughest parts of this project,” Nathan revealed. “We had to drain it completely to work safely.” To achieve this, teams built temporary dams. Once the water was clear, the real work began.
Draining the moat, which required building temporary dams, was just the beginning. Did you know the Castle stands an impressive 180 feet tall? Repainting this icon took a dedicated team 3 months. They used 7 boom lifts to reach every corner, and poured over 600 gallons of paint onto its walls! The updated palette features elegant grays, creams, blues, and delicate touches of gold, making it truly sparkle.
