Ever fallen in love with an animal at Disney’s Animal Kingdom? Bakso, the magnificent Sumatran tiger, surely captured many hearts from the moment he arrived.
For the past two years, we’ve watched this playful Sumatran tiger grow up right before our eyes on the Maharajah Jungle Trek. He went from a tiny cub to a confident young adult. Remember seeing him splash in the pool, pounce on new toys, or just showing off his amazing stripes? He really charmed everyone.
But now, Bakso is getting ready for his next big adventure.
As he turns two, Bakso will soon leave Animal Kingdom this fall. He’s heading to another zoo accredited by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA). It’s sad to see him go, but we’re thrilled for this next chapter in his life.
This move isn’t just a simple relocation; it’s incredibly important. There are fewer than 600 Sumatran tigers left in the wild. Bakso could become a father one day, helping to ensure the future of this critically endangered species. What a responsibility!
From Curious Cub to Young Adult
Bakso, born to Sohni and Conrad in September 2024, quickly became a guest favorite. From his first public appearance, we’ve seen him grow into a beautiful tiger with a curious and adventurous spirit. He truly leaves an impression.
Fun facts about Bakso:
- Bakso’s name actually means “meatball” in Indonesian – isn’t that adorable?
- Like all big cats, Sumatran tigers are carnivores. The amazing team at Disney’s Animal Nutrition Center prepares all their meals.
- Each tiger has unique stripe patterns, just like human fingerprints! No two are ever exactly alike.
Growing up is a huge step for any animal, especially tigers. As they mature, young tigers become more independent and naturally seek out their own territories. So, Bakso’s move is a very natural part of him becoming an adult.
Why is Bakso Leaving Animal Kingdom?
His move comes from a recommendation by the AZA’s Species Survival Plan. This fantastic program connects accredited zoos, helping them collaborate to care for endangered animals and secure their species’ future within managed care.
Disney’s Commitment to Tiger Conservation
This isn’t just about celebrating Bakso; it’s about giving hope to the entire Sumatran tiger species. With so few (under 600) left in the wild, every birthday is a powerful reminder. By giving our animals top-notch care and supporting conservation efforts, we truly make a difference for tigers everywhere.
Bakso truly embodies the amazing teamwork between Disney and the Association of Zoos & Aquarium’s Species Survival Plan (SSP). They work hand-in-hand to boost populations of endangered and threatened species in zoos.
Beyond Animal Kingdom, the Disney Conservation Fund (DCF) also makes a huge impact for wildlife worldwide. As part of the Disney Planet Possible commitment, the DCF has given over $4.5 million since 1995. This money goes to 15 organizations that protect tigers and their forest homes.

While Bakso enjoys his birthday treats like ice and goat’s milk, remember the dozens of incredible Disney animal care experts behind his healthy growth. They made this milestone possible!
Our skilled veterinarians, nutritionists, and animal keepers, among others, have ensured this tiger cub grew up healthy and strong. Disney Cast Members have been with him every step of the way, from preparing his meals to creating a personalized habitat.
Meet Sarah, one of those dedicated animal keepers. She handles the daily care, feeding, enrichment, and health monitoring for the tigers on Maharajah Jungle Trek.
Sarah shared, “I’ve always dreamed of working with tigers, and it’s truly a dream come true to work with a baby tiger like Bakso. Watching him learn, grow, and hit so many milestones has taught me so much.”
These milestones also wouldn’t happen without experts like Michelle, a Behavioral Husbandry Manager. She guides the animal keepers working with Bakso and his mom, Sohni. This vital process even started before Bakso was born!
Michelle’s expertise helps the keepers teach Bakso to participate in his own health checks. This builds trust and empowers the tiger in his care. She also designs his habitat elements and enrichment activities, making sure they stimulate his natural behaviors and challenge his clever mind. By watching Bakso, Michelle truly understands his curious and playful personality.
“People often don’t realize how unique each tiger’s personality is,” Michelle noted. “The best part of my job is witnessing all those little moments that shape Bakso into who he is.”
