  • Behind the Scenes: How Arendelle Castle Took Shape at Disney Adventure World

Ever wondered how Disney builds those breathtaking landmarks? Well, the Arendelle Castle, the new icon for the World of Frozen at Disney Adventure World, truly showcases that magic. This incredible structure comes to life thanks to a brilliant partnership between Walt Disney Imagineering Paris and UK Loco Ltd.

UK Loco Ltd, a British company based in Cropthorne, England, specializes in theming and engineering and boasts a long, rich history with Disneyland Paris. Together, these teams painstakingly brought the world of Frozen into an environment designed to be deeply immersive and incredibly detailed.

The castle itself boasts a unique architectural style, a real feast for the eyes. Its design masterfully blends the sturdy base of a fortified castle with elegant rooflines inspired by traditional Norwegian stave churches – you know, like the iconic Borgund church from the 12th century! Translating these historical influences into a themed structure demands incredible precision. Imagine overlapping roofs, perfectly sculpted silhouettes, and surface treatments that look just right from every angle, distance, and in any light. That’s the level of detail we’re talking about here.

This project truly shines because of its blend of cutting-edge engineering and timeless artistry. Right from the very first steps, UK Loco Ltd worked hand-in-hand with Imagineers. They created incredibly detailed 3D models of the castle, its walls, and turrets. This allowed the design teams to scrutinize every single angle, fine-tuning both the creative look and structural elements long, long before any physical production even began. It’s all about planning!

After that meticulous design phase, they manufactured the internal steel support structure, ensuring it met strict certifications. Once the foundations were perfectly set, work moved to the stunning facade. Get this: they even built a physical scale model of a castle section, complete with scenic painting, just for Walt Disney Imagineering Paris to review. This crucial step allowed them to confirm materials, finishes, and the creative vision was absolutely perfect before full production kicked off.

Bringing it all to life required a host of specialized skills:

    • Aluminum fabrication for the spires and roofing elements
    • Carpentry and jig creation for the detailed wall textures
    • Nearly 2000 decorative shingle panels spread across the roof and facade
    • Scenic painting, with references to the intricate Scandinavian rosemaling technique
    • Lighting design to perfect the final appearance

The entire castle design creates a powerful visual landmark right at the heart of the land. They even used forced perspective – a classic Disney Imagineering trick! – to make it feel even grander and more immersive. And yes, this is where you’ll get to meet Anna and Elsa for a Royal Welcome!

This incredible project also extends a long-standing partnership between Disneyland Paris and UK Loco Ltd. Over the years, their talented teams have contributed to some of the resort’s most iconic experiences. Think of Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, Toy Story Playland, Crush’s Coaster, and Ratatouille: The Adventure. More recently, they even built the Quinjet for Avengers Campus. Talk about a versatile and essential team!

Stephen Paget, Managing Director of UK Loco Ltd, shared his excitement: “It’s a real source of pride for all of us at UK Loco to be a trusted supplier to Disneyland Paris. Contributing to Disney Adventure World feels especially significant as we celebrate 20 years of collaboration with Walt Disney Imagineering Paris.”
