  • Behind the Magic: The Green Thumbs Keeping Disney World’s Sports Complex Pristine

Ever wondered how Walt Disney World keeps its massive ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in such pristine condition? We’re talking about over 260 acres, folks! It’s a huge job, and it’s all thanks to an incredible team of Cast Members whose passion for sports and Disney shines through every blade of grass.

This dedicated group, affectionately known as the « Sportscape » team (that’s sports meets landscape!), works tirelessly year-round. They maintain more than 30 fields, ensuring everything is perfect for the nearly 300,000 athletes and 800,000 spectators who visit for over 50 different events each year. Next year, this incredible complex celebrates its 30th anniversary – a testament to their continuous hard work!

The Cast Members Behind the Fields

Let’s meet some of these unsung heroes. John Bolger, a Cast Member for 36 years, has been here since day one in 1997, caring for the fields since the very first baseball game. « I’ve been here since opening day, » he shares, « and it’s been amazing to see the growth from a few fields to the more than 30 we have today. » For John, Disney isn’t just a job; it’s a family legacy, inspired by his mother, also a Cast Member. « I love Disney because of her, » he says, « and I wouldn’t want to go anywhere else. »

But John isn’t alone. Maryanne Baglos leads this incredible team as Turf Manager and Horticulture Manager for Lawn and Ornamental Pest Management. « What we do here is truly a team effort, » Maryanne explains. « All our Cast Members bring their individual experiences, working together to make the entire complex beautiful. » With 27 years at Disney, Maryanne finds joy in perfecting spaces for guests and inspiring her team. She truly celebrates their passion and artistry, knowing that « when I take pride in their craftsmanship, the cast take pride in it too. »

Then there’s Willie Congrove, a Field Manager with an impressive 40 years of Disney service! For Willie, ESPN Wide World of Sports feels like home. He’s even seen his own children compete there. « I’ve had great times with my children when they’ve competed here, » Willie shares. « We try to make each area as safe and perfect as possible so others can enjoy coming here too. » This commitment to safety and perfection truly shines through everything they do, from the 17 multi-purpose fields to the 12 baseball/softball diamonds, the baseball stadium, and the track & field complex.

Bringing New Sports Experiences to Life

Since 1997, the complex has grown, welcoming more fans and hosting new, exciting events in Central Florida. Take the upcoming Banana Ball games, for example! This fan-first experience perfectly fits a venue renowned for creating championship-level experiences for athletes and fans alike. Our Sportscape team is already hard at work prepping the stadium for teams like the Loco Beach Coconuts and the Party Animals. It’s always fascinating to see how they bring these new sports experiences to life!
