Get ready, sports fans! Something wild is coming to Walt Disney World. The ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, our beloved athletic hub, is about to host Banana Ball for the very first time. But before the Party Animals and Loco Beach Coconuts hit the field, let’s lace up our cleats and revisit nearly three decades of incredible sports history at this unique Disney venue!
Since opening its doors in March 1997, the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World Resort has become one of the most dynamic sports destinations in the country. This amazing 260+ acre multi-sports wonderland offers amateur, collegiate, and professional athletes the chance to compete with the best. Our dedicated Cast Members keep the complex running perfectly, all within the vibrant Central Florida landscape.
Over the years, the complex has always stepped up to the plate, adapting to host a huge range of events across baseball, basketball, cheerleading, football, soccer, and even long-distance running. Every chapter adds to its ongoing legacy, showcasing incredible scale, flexibility, and the constant opportunity for athletes to shine.
Exploring The Stadium and Other Baseball Fun at ESPN Wide World of Sports
Baseball truly took center stage when Disney’s Wide World of Sports officially opened on March 28, 1997. Over 10,000 fans packed the stadium for a sellout game, watching the Cincinnati Reds battle the Atlanta Braves. The Braves took a high-scoring 9-7 victory, kicking off a long and special connection between this venue and America’s pastime. Just for fun, did you know that former Atlanta legend Fred McGriff hit the first home run in the stadium’s history during that 1997 exhibition game? Cincinnati’s superstar Deion Sanders made history too, with the first hit, stolen base, and run in the same game!
The Atlanta Braves made the complex their official spring training home from 1998 through 2019, making this site a hub for rising prospects and established stars. I loved catching glimpses of baseball legends like Freddie Freeman and Jason Heyward (two of my favorites who had some big moments!), and Hall of Famers Greg Maddux and Chipper Jones. Even stars like Derek Jeter and Albert Pujols from other teams would pass through during Grapefruit League play.
The Stadium even hosted international competition in March 2006 for the inaugural World Baseball Classic. Teams from Australia, the Dominican Republic, Italy, and Venezuela all played their opening round games here. More recently, in 2023, the Tampa Bay Rays used the complex for part of their spring training, even hosting a game against the New York Yankees.
Today, this ballpark keeps evolving while respecting its roots. With about 9,500 seats, four luxury sky boxes, open-air suites, patios, and a huge LED video board in the outfield, it’s still a fantastic place for both players and fans to enjoy a game. They even designed the ballpark in a north-south orientation to minimize sun glare during afternoon games – smart thinking, especially if you’re trying to catch a high pop-up in the Florida sky!

Additional Venues and Facilities Across ESPN Wide World of Sports
The ESPN Wide World of Sports has constantly grown to support a wide array of sports and events, with facilities built for everything from youth tournaments to professional competitions. It’s truly amazing how flexible this campus is. Here are some of the standout venues:
- AdventHealth Arena: This versatile indoor arena can host many events, especially cheerleading. It features 8,000 seats, concessions, and can split into four separate competition spaces.
- Athletic Center: Often a hub for basketball and cheerleading, this multi-sport venue includes over 1,000 seats, locker rooms, and concessions.
- Baseball Quadraplex: Here you’ll find four professional-size fields, with two lit for nighttime play, plus a youth league baseball diamond.
- Sports Fields: Spanning over 50 acres, these 17 multi-purpose outdoor fields boast pristine, pro-level natural grass, ready for football, soccer, field hockey, and more.
- Softball Diamondplex: Perfect for slow-pitch, fast-pitch softball, and youth baseball, it has six full-sized diamonds with digital scoreboards and shaded dugouts, all with 305-foot fences.
- State Farm Field House: A 49,000 square-foot arena with over 5,000 seats, configurable for basketball, volleyball, gymnastics, cheer, and dance. It also hosts televised events like the ESPN Events Invitational.
- Track and Field Complex: This training facility features nine running lanes, shaded bleachers, and a natural grass infield for various meets and competitions.
Beyond the playing fields, even the architecture tells a story. The distinct green-and-yellow color palette and tiled green roofs reflect a “Florida Picturesque” style, rooted in classic Florida design. You’ll even spot subtle nods to iconic places like the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, blending timeless sports architecture with the beautiful Central Florida landscape.
A Campus Built for Competition
Twenty-nine years later, the ESPN Wide World of Sports remains a vital cornerstone for amateur athletics. Every year, almost 300,000 athletes and 800,000 spectators from around the globe flock to Central Florida for over 50 different youth championship tournaments in sports like baseball, basketball, cheer, and dance. As many Disney World parkgoers (like me!) can tell you, the constant buzz of these competitions has become a defining part of the resort experience.
This tradition goes way back! The complex hosted the first Pop Warner Super Bowl and Cheer & Dance national championships in December 1998. Since then, it’s seen a steady stream of youth and amateur competitions, showing off its versatility and creating countless milestone moments for young athletes. For instance, the first AAU Boys Basketball National Championship happened here in July 1997, and in January 1998, Team USA even trained here for the FIFA World Cup!

These events truly shape competitive opportunities and create unforgettable team bonding memories, reaching far beyond the diamond, pitch, or court. After a big game, who wouldn’t want to battle it out on Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin as a team?
Historic Moments from Over the Years
The ESPN Wide World of Sports has hosted so many defining moments in the sports world, welcoming top athletes and global events that have etched its place in history.
Most notably, in 2020, the complex became a global stage as the host for the NBA’s “bubble” season during the pandemic. NBA teams competed across three venues: the AdventHealth Arena, the State Farm Field House, and the Athletic Center. The AdventHealth Arena even hosted the league’s biggest matchups, including that season’s NBA Finals between the Los Angeles Lakers and Miami Heat. The Lakers, led by LeBron James and Anthony Davis, won their 17th NBA championship right here!
Beyond pro basketball, the complex has hosted other incredibly impactful events. In 2012, First Lady Michelle Obama visited Disney World for her “Let’s Move!” initiative, speaking to hundreds of children and parents about healthy living. Then, in 2016, Prince Harry’s Invictus Games brought together over 500 wounded, ill, and injured military personnel, showing the world the power of resilience and community.
The NFL’s Pro Bowl celebrations have also called the complex home in recent years, with many of the league’s top players like Patrick Mahomes, Dak Prescott, Kirk Cousins, and Patrick Surtain II taking part in reimagined skills competitions and fan events. It’s amazing to see these stars up close against the backdrop of The Most Magical Place On Earth.

Since the complex’s reimagining in 2010, countless superstar athletes have made appearances here. Just look at some of those memorable moments captured above! Even Orlando City Soccer played their full regular season slate on Field 17 in 2014 with expanded fan capacity, and the complex hosted the MLS is Back tournament in 2020, won by the Portland Timbers.
