Have you ever dreamed of truly taking flight? Disney Parks have mastered that magic for decades. Think about it: the gentle lift on Dumbo, soaring over London on Peter Pan’s Flight, or even the jump to lightspeed on Star Tours. These moments, ingrained in the heart of Disneyland Resort, make us believe we can fly.
Then, in 2001, an attraction debuted at Disney California Adventure that took this feeling to an entirely new level: Soarin’ Over California. It lifted us higher than ever, giving us breathtaking views of the Golden State.
Now, prepare for your next adventure! Soarin’ Across America launches at Disneyland Resort on July 2. Before you board your flight, let’s dive into the fascinating history of this beloved attraction and see how it keeps reaching for the sky.
Exploring the Golden State on Soarin’ Over California
Soarin’ Over California opened with Disney California Adventure park in 2001, making our dreams of flight a reality. It whisked guests away on an exhilarating airborne journey across California, complete with awe-inspiring vistas. Before boarding their state-of-the-art flying machine, guests learned about aviation heroes and legends, all while getting crucial safety information from our favorite chief flight attendant, Patrick!

But how did Imagineers create such an immersive experience? One massive challenge involved placing over 80 guests into an 80-foot-high domed screen. Ride engineer Mark Sumner took on this task. Desperate for ideas during development, Sumner remembered his dusty Erector set in the attic. He pulled it out – toy-size nuts, bolts, girders, pulleys, and all.
For days, Sumner worked tirelessly on a model. In true Imagineering fashion, he rolled a carriage forward, up, and out toward a screen. This “lift-and-glide” system became the ride’s signature element. Talk about ingenuity!

From San Fran to Disneyland: Soarin’ Over California Destinations
Imagine bursting through the clouds to see the Golden Gate Bridge, floating over Napa Valley vineyards dotted with hot air balloons, or catching the sunset on the stunning Malibu shores. Who could forget the powerful golf drive at PGA West in La Quinta, sending a ball right toward your face?
We know and love these Golden State destinations. The attraction, which debuted on February 8, 2001, featured unique scents and Jerry Goldsmith’s unforgettable original score. It took us on an aerial journey from Northern to Southern California, starting in the early morning and progressing to nightfall.
You’d glide past Half Dome in Yosemite National Park, the snowy slopes of Lake Tahoe, and the rugged coastline of Point Lobos in Monterey. And who could forget zipping through downtown Los Angeles at night, past towering buildings, near the former Staples Center, and – of course – over the always-easy-to-navigate and never-crowded 110 freeway?

If you’ve been flying with Soarin’ since 2001, you definitely have a favorite destination. (A special shout-out from me to the orange groves of Camarillo, not far from my own hometown!) You might have even seen some of the “travel posters” Disney Parks shared on social media earlier this year, celebrating the attraction’s limited-time return in early 2026. What a treat!

Soarin’ Over California Fun Facts:
- Before filming the scene where horses gallop through Anza Borrego State Park, the crew hired archaeologists to assess the area.
- Like something out of an Indiana Jones movie, the team hand-dusted nearly four miles of trail to ensure no artifacts were disturbed. You can even spot this on film!
Here’s another cool story that makes this version of Soarin’ extra special for long-time Disney Parks fans. In that same Anza Borrego scene, the iconic Thunderbirds fly into view, dazzling guests with their speed and precision.
At the time, Lt. Col. Brian Bishop, known as “Be-Bop,” was the lead pilot of the Thunderbirds. Lead pilots only hold their position for a maximum of three years, and Bishop’s tenure was ending. But in a truly storybook finale, “Be-Bop” got to participate in filming this sequence for Soarin’ – his final flight as commander of the Thunderbirds! It was a perfect send-off, cementing his legacy in aviation and Disney Parks history. This heartfelt tribute perfectly captures the magic of the attraction, reminding us why Soarin’ remains a cherished favorite worldwide.

Navigating the Globe on Soarin’ Around the World
In the summer of 2016, Soarin’ Around the World took flight at Disney California Adventure, transporting eager aviators far beyond California to iconic global landmarks. This updated film swapped Golden State vistas for a grand global itinerary, soaring past famous wonders like the Great Wall of China, the Taj Mahal, the Eiffel Tower, and the icy peaks of the Matterhorn.

Soarin’ Around the World Fun Facts:
- During filming of the Matterhorn sequence, the camera used by the crew froze solid in extreme conditions, delaying production for almost two hours while it thawed.
- Fortunately, the Abominable Snowman made no appearance during filming!
The experience boasted sweeping new aerial footage and enhanced scents – the ocean smells of Fiji? Yes, please! – bringing each location to vivid life. Plus, composer Bruce Broughton beautifully adapted Jerry Goldsmith’s original score for the new show, incorporating regional instruments. He even recorded it with the London Symphony Orchestra at the legendary Abbey Road Studios!

What began as a tribute to California’s beauty transformed into a global odyssey, reflecting the attraction’s growing presence in Disney Parks worldwide. It offered guests the incredible chance to circle the globe in a single flight. You’d soar past iconic spots like the majestic Matterhorn in the Swiss Alps, the vast plains of Greenland, Sydney Harbour in Australia, Germany’s fairytale Neuschwanstein Castle, the towering Mount Kilimanjaro, the Great Wall of China, the ancient Great Pyramids of Egypt, India’s Taj Mahal, Monument Valley in the USA, the sun-kissed Lau Island in Fiji, the powerful Iguazu Falls, the elegant Eiffel Tower in France, and even get a special flyover of the Disneyland Resort itself.

Even as the journey expanded globally, the heart of Soarin’ remained. It still lifts guests high into the air, glides them in formation, and delivers that same sense of scale and movement that defined it from day one. As someone who’s never seen the twinkle of Paris at night or the sheer spectacle of the Great Pyramids in person, this was a special chance to “visit” these landmarks for the first time. It truly is a wondrous journey around the globe, something only Disney can create.
