You might remember the Warrior Games from 2022 or 2024; this will be the third time Disney World hosts this powerful event. For those who don’t know, the Warrior Games started back in 2010. It’s an annual national competition where wounded, ill, and injured service members and veterans get to push their limits and show off their incredible strength and resilience. It’s not just about winning medals; it’s about supporting recovery, celebrating journeys, and shining a well-deserved spotlight on their extraordinary determination.
What Are The Warrior Games? Unpacked!
In 2027, we’ll see nearly 200 competitors battling it out across 12 adaptive sports at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. Imagine watching archery, cycling, indoor rowing, pickleball, and even wheelchair rugby – it’s going to be intense and incredibly inspiring! Every branch of the military will be represented, with teams from the Army, Marine Corps, Navy/Coast Guard, Air Force/Space Force, and Special Operations Command.
To kick things off for this big announcement, Disney and Warrior Games leaders, alongside community members and past competitors, gathered at the sports complex. They shared all the exciting details, even throwing in a pickleball demonstration! It really set the stage for what’s to come.
Just recently, U.S. Army veteran Tony Smith, a Warrior Games competitor, received a special honor. Magic Kingdom hosted a moving Flag Retreat ceremony on August 6, recognizing his service and sacrifice. Even with the rain, the crowd in Town Square gave him a heartfelt round of applause – a truly special moment.
