  • Get Ready to Meet Bakari: Animal Kingdom Welcomes Its New Silverback Gorilla Leader!

A new silverback has arrived at Disney’s Animal Kingdom! Get ready to meet Bakari, a magnificent 21-year-old western lowland gorilla. He’s settling into his crucial new role as leader of the park’s family troop along the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail.

This is a big moment for the park. For nearly three decades, the beloved silverback Gino led the family group, guiding generations of gorillas. Now, Bakari steps in, marking the start of an exciting new era for the troop.

Rachel, an animal care manager with Disney’s Animals, Science and Environment, shared the team’s mixed emotions. “Bringing Bakari here is bittersweet, as we said goodbye to Gino after almost 30 years since the park’s opening,” she explained. “But it’s also incredibly exciting. Bakari is the future of this family, and we’re eager to watch him grow into his role and hopefully welcome new generations of gorillas for years to come.”

Bringing Bakari Home: The Delicate Art of Introductions

You can imagine, introducing a new gorilla to a troop isn’t as simple as just saying “welcome!” Behind the scenes, Disney’s animal care experts meticulously guide a carefully planned introduction. This process ensures Bakari settles comfortably and that he and the females have time to build strong, positive social bonds.

Before arriving at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Bakari lived in a bachelor group at another Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA)-accredited zoo, socializing with other males. Joining a family troop is a natural step for adult male gorillas, but the group needs time to adjust to their new dynamic. That’s why these introductions always happen gradually.

First, the gorillas see each other through a protected viewing area. This allows them to become familiar while experts closely monitor their interactions. As they grow more comfortable, the introductions progress step by step, eventually allowing for touch and closer social interactions. Disney’s animal care teams guide every milestone with their incredible expertise and keen observations.

“This is all very new for Bakari,” Rachel explained. “Our goal is to help him feel comfortable and confident at every stage. We take the process slowly because building those social relationships with the females is incredibly important.”

This dedication is part of Disney’s commitment to exceptional animal care. It’s also supported by the AZA Species Survival Plan (SSP), a vital program that helps maintain strong, genetically diverse populations of western lowland gorillas in managed care.

“Pairing Bakari with our females can truly strengthen the long-term future of the population,” Rachel noted. “That’s crucial because we want future generations to connect with these animals and be inspired to help protect them.”

    Getting to Know Bakari

While Bakari gets to know his new family, the animal care experts are also learning all about his unique personality. So far, he’s shown a calm and easygoing demeanor. He often takes time to quietly observe his surroundings as he settles into life at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

One behavior already becoming a favorite among his caretakers? Bakari loves to stretch out and lounge, often with his chin resting on his hand, simply taking in all the activity around him. He sounds like a true chiller!

It’s fascinating to learn how gorilla troops work: the dominant silverback plays a crucial role in guiding and protecting the family, helping maintain a stable and cohesive dynamic. Gorilla troops thrive on strong family bonds, typically made up of multiple females and their offspring, with a single dominant male at the center. Within the troop, gorillas learn from one another through daily interactions, making each new introduction an important step in building those relationships over time.

For park guests, Bakari’s arrival means even more to explore and discover along the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail. As he continues to settle into his new home, you might start seeing him interacting with other troop members, offering a unique opportunity to observe these incredible animals up close at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
